The picture below is one of a known pair, taken between the hangars at Bassingbourn. The data strip, applied to the negative by the base photo-lab shows the date of May 19 1943, the day that the aircraft supposedly completed its 25th mission, in the hands of Lt Anderson and his crew. The picture shows most but not all of the Morgan crew, with the man himself standing at the bottom of the stepladder as Joe Giambrone paints on the 25th bomb symbol. Again, in the Morgan/Powers book it is described differently. On page 211 they describe how Giambrone was waiting for them as they returned from the 25th mission on May 17, waiting to paint the 25th bomb symbol on that row that graced the fuselage. This then raises the question as to if this picture was posed, for Morgan did not fly the aircraft is day! [USAAF via Tower Museum Bassingbourn] |
