Description |
The U-Boat Pen complex at St. Nazaire during the opening ceremony conducted by Vice Admiral Karl Doenitz in June 1941. The first vessel to use the facility was U-203, seen entering the newly completed ‘pens’ or shelters. The roof of these structures was 25 feet thick, and virtually impregnable to aerial attack By July 1944, several thousand tons of bombs had been unloaded on the port, with most of the town destroyed, but the bunkers with their intricate roof structure remained intact. |
