1. Badge, Military - The squadron badges of the four Bomb Squadrons that made up the 91st Bomb Group. From left to right: 322nd BS. 323rd BS, 324th BS, 401st BS. The ‘Bugs Bunny’ character carrying the bomb as featured on the 324th badge later evolved into wearing a flak jacket and helmet!

2. Examination - A two-page medical examination report for Robert Morgan, conducted on February 10th 1941. Clearly it shows his vision as 20/20 - perfect for an Aviation Cadet!

5. List - With the source documentation we have is a series of carbon copies of the ‘loading lists’ for most of the missions. They are not of the best quality, but the one for the December 20th 1942 mission is readable and shows who was aboard each aircraft, what position they flew in and, for some strange reason, their salary! This document, from the Squadron Operations Officer to the Group Operations Officer, refers to the 324th BS as ‘Red Squadron’, and shows that Jim Verinis was the co-pilot that day.

7. Memorandum - a memento kept from that meeting in Jackson. One wonders... who were Lorraine and Edie?

8. Memorandum - Despite the Group being on a war footing and operating constantly in a combat zone, there was time to fraternize with the ‘natives’. 10. Orders, Military - The file copy of Special Order 112 demoting T/Sgt Levi Dillon to Sergeant. Interestingly, on the same day T/Sgt Eugene Adkins - who was to replace Dillion on the Memphis Belle was also demoted, this time to Staff Sergeant!

11. Orders, Military - The file copy of Special Order 32 demoting Corporal Nastal to Private. From the many Special Orders located, it seems that demotes and promotes happened at the drop of a hat!

12. Orders, Military - File copies of two pages showing Operations Order 69, sent by telex from Wing HQ to the 91st BG on 5th December 1942 in preparation for the raid on Lille, coded target Z-183 ‘B’ the next day. These pages demonstrate the level of detail and depth of preparation that was undertaken before the Bomb Groups were even aware of the mission. These orders could be and were cancelled at a moments notice if circumstances such as weather conditions were to change.

16. Record, Military - This is the cover of the Maintenance Inspection Record for 41-24485 for the period August to December 1942, as kept by M/Sgt Joe Giambrone, the Memphis Belle’s crew chief. It is by using this document, that we are able to state who flew the aircraft on any particular day during its flying life.

17. Record, Military - Page 6A of the Memphis Belle’s Maintenance log The first line September 30th records the transatlantic crossing from Gander Lake Air Base Newfoundland to Prestwick Airport in Scotland in eleven hours forty-five minutes. All these flights show the pilot as ‘Lt Morgan’

18. Report - The post-mission report as telexed back to Wing HQ by the 91st BG. All follow a standard format where ‘A’ is the target, ‘B’ is the number of aircraft dispatched, ‘C’ is the Squadrons participating (along with number of aircraft provided) ‘D’ is the number of planes returning with defects, ‘E’ is the overall result of the raid, ‘F’ is the opposition encountered from the enemy, ‘G’ is the number of enemy aircraft shot down, ‘H’ is the damage to the Group’s aircraft, ‘I’ is the number and type of casualties and ‘J’ is any pertinent remarks.

19. Telegram - Almost a private ‘flight plan’ for the arrival of 41-24485 at Memphis! Dated September 11th Bob Morgan ‘filed’ it from the Biltmore Forest Country Club in Ashville, North Carolina.

20. Telegram - Bob Morgan’s telegram to Margaret telling her that they had arrived safely in the UK. It’s interesting to note that when Western Union tried to deliver it, she was not home, so the delivery person wrote on it ‘gone to school be home at 4.30’!
